At Prism Power we pride ourselves reacting quickly to our customer’s needs. In this case study, we document an example of our rapid response involving a power failure and burn-out of a switch room in a London school.
Description
Recently, Prism Power responded to an emergency call from one of our Facilities Management clients. Their client, a school located in Croydon in London, had suffered a serious power incident resulting in a fire that had broken out inside the building's switch room.
Prism Power's site engineers attended the school immediately, finding the switch room completely burned out with even the roof destroyed. The school was left entirely without power as a result of the incident.
Challenges and issues to be resolved
• Make the switch room safe, disconnect and strip out damaged equipment
• Provide back-up power via a mobile generator
• Provide and install replacement switchgear equipment
• Restore a permenant safe and resilient power supply
Action taken
Fortunately for the school, it was approaching half term, but it was imperative that a suitable power solution was implemented in time for the pupils and staff to return the following week.
Within just a few hours of the call-out, our engineers were already working inside the switch room, disconnecting what remained of the cables and stripping out all of the burned and damaged equipment. Meanwhile, we procured a mobile generator and a bulk fuel tank and set the equipment up ready to restore power to the school.
Three days before the pupils returned to the school, while the electricity authority was in the process of replacing their switchgear and transformer, we restored power to the building via a mobile generator. Having the generator power available enabled power supply to vital security equipment and kitchen freezers restocked in readiness of the pupils returning to school.
